Applies to
The original Generation 1 Standard and Pro chiller arrangements shown in the video. These are separate branches. The Inkbird thermowell probe and later All-In thermistors are different components.
Who should use this: Established DIY topic; customer use only for the verified matching procedure and parts. Uncertain cases go to Repairs.
Before starting
Before disconnecting leads or opening the electrical enclosure, switch off and unplug the entire Plunge from its wall supply. Keep plugs and the electrical enclosure dry. Do not work on energized equipment, splice wires or open the controller itself. Use the matching replacement supplied for this repair. If the installed equipment or replacement differs from the guide, stop and ask Plunge Support for the correct procedure.
Drain before opening the water system: Before opening a water connection or removing a chiller probe, unplug the Plunge and drain it through its external drain into a suitable location. Allow the connected plumbing to empty; place towels and a container for residual water. Do not rely on an unidentified valve as isolation. If water continues to feed the connection, stop and obtain Support instructions before removing it.
Video
Read the preparation and completion steps as well as watching the video; the video alone omits some of them.
Steps
- Identify the original Generation 1 Standard or Pro chiller and the matching replacement probe. Photograph the lead, connector and retainer. Follow the power-off and drain preparation above before loosening the probe retainer; the short video omits that preparation.
- Standard branch (start of video): remove the access screw shown at the bottom, trace the probe lead and disconnect its matching connector. The housing is removed in the demonstration to show the part; full housing removal is not a required step for the illustrated access route.
- At the Standard reservoir probe fitting, loosen the retainer completely. Lift the sealing insert/probe assembly as shown, supporting the assembly rather than pulling its wire. Inspect the sealing insert before fitting the matching replacement.
- Reseat the Standard sealing insert and retainer, then fully insert the probe to the demonstrated position. Stop if the insert is damaged, the probe differs or the retainer does not seat; do not substitute seal dimensions or tighten beyond the matched part’s instructions.
- Pro branch (about 1:35 onward): locate the reservoir on the left, trace its probe lead to the matching connector and disconnect it. Loosen the probe retainer and lift out the illustrated assembly. Fit the matching probe and intact sealing insert, reseat and secure the retainer, and fully seat the probe. Do not use wire color alone to identify the part.
- Reconnect the matched electrical connector and reinstall the access cover and its fastener. This does not replace or relocate the separate Inkbird thermowell probe.
- Close the external drain and restore the repaired fittings. Use the Generation 1 setup sequence: connect the pump hose to the chiller IN port, fill the tub halfway, then attach the filter hose to the chiller OUT port and finish filling to the applicable setup-guide level. Do not attach OUT before the tub is halfway full. Keep the heater and chiller supply plugs disconnected while first checking circulation. With all other required connections restored and the enclosure dry and closed, restore main power to run the circulation pump. Verify flow at the jets. If flow is absent, stop here. Then switch off and unplug the main supply before reopening the enclosure to reconnect the heater/chiller to their verified outlets. Close the enclosure, restore power and confirm flow continues before normal heating or cooling. Inspect the repaired connections for leaks during refill and operation. Stop if there is a leak, no flow or an abnormal indication.
- Read the displayed temperature and error status. If a leak, implausible reading or error remains, stop and provide Support the model, displayed code and clear photos of the probe/connector; do not repeatedly reset or bypass the probe.
Check the result
The probe/retainer is seated without leakage, all covers are installed, water circulation is established and the displayed reading is plausible. A replaced probe is not proof that every cause of an error was corrected.
